Captcha Failed. Please Try Again.
This is the dreaded message we get when trying to prove our humanity to the computer. Captchas were designed to prevent bot attacks and spam posts. Captcha stands for Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart. Who knew?

In efforts to make websites more secure, Captchas have been getting more difficult in an attempt to foil the bots. In return, many times humans are even more confused. How many times have we wondered, is this a 5 or an S?
According to a recent non-reviewed study, recent advances in machine learning and image recognition, allow bots to solve these puzzling Captchas at rates between 85% to 100%. Humans are typically in the 50% to 85% range. Besides increased accuracy, the bots are faster.
So, what does this mean? If these findings hold true, security experts will need to find alternative methods to foil the bots. Either way, it is always a case of staying one step ahead.
